Video: In-situ Opportunities for Small Business

Transcript

“When you think of the oil sands, the first image that pops into your head is likely those oversized mining trucks but right now we’re at the start of a wave that’s going to last for 20 years or even longer, and it’s called in-situ,” says Monica Ospina, director of O Trade and Market Access.

“In-situ is a process where oil companies access the underground deposits of bitumen by heating it, using steam, and pumping the oil to the surface.

“There are two advantages here. The first one being that the environmental impact is smaller. The second advantage is that small businesses can get in on the ground floor of exciting, new and important technology.”

“Most of the time we associate the oil sands with what is happening up in Fort McMurray but we’re going to see in-situ projects all across Alberta. From Cold Lake and Bonnyville to Peace River.”

“People are used to dealing directly with large engineering companies. Instead, small businesses can deal directly with any number of companies that are active in the supply chain. This creates opportunities not just in small, localized instances but provides the chance to be an active player in a whole new technology that is going to change the way Alberta is exploiting its oil.”
