Making the Case for Energy Efficiency

Making the Case for Energy Efficiency

In some cases, very simple changes, such as turning off the lights in an unoccupied room, can result in decreased energy consumption. However, energy management is a complex and important process that must be integrated into your organization’s day-to-day operations.

To become more energy efficient as a small or medium enterprise (SME), you need to:

  • assess what your current energy consumption is
  • build a business case for introducing energy reduction strategies
  • get buy-in from across your organization, particularly at the highest level

Your business case should:

  • identify areas of energy inefficiencies
  • define the need for agreement of common best practices within your organization (benchmarking these with industry best practices as required)
  • identify key performance indicators (KPI’s) that measure your business’s success
  • quantify the improvement anticipated in your KPI’s through successful adoption of energy efficiency best practices
  • provide a quantified cost, benefit and risk analysis that makes a clear case for energy efficiency
  • propose a schedule for the implementation of energy efficiencies that can be sustained with the resources available
